We already mentioned that people who succeed at selling are those who network effectively. The good news is that it gets easier when you have secured a few customers - because you can then start to network through your customers!

Once you have shown your customer that you can do a good job, follow the principles of networking to ask them for further contacts.

If you have a very good relationship with any of your customers, you can also try to ask them to do something called ‘customer get customer'. If you’ve done a good job for a customer, you can try to turn him or her into a salesperson for you! Here’s how:

  • Ask the customer whether he or she knows anyone who might be interested in the kinds of services that you offer.
  • Then ask whether your customer would be willing to call their contact to explain that you’ll be giving them a call. Also ask your customer to tell their contact about the sorts of work that you have helped them with.

And then make that call, mentioning your customer. In this way you avoid having to make an entirely cold call.

  •  Don’t forget to ask your satisfied customers to provide you with case studies, references or testimonials. Politely ask them whether they would mind writing you a letter to add to your ‘satisfied customer’
    file. In most cases they will be delighted to do so don’t forget to ask your customers for more contacts and to help you network. If you work hard to satisfy your current customers, then ‘customer get customer’ is one of the most effective ways of gaining more customers.
